Scrap metal prices are mostly based on metal type and properties

How is scrap metal priced?

Scrap yards buy metal by the pound. It’s highly unlikely that you will be paid by scrap.

We know this is not what you want to hear, but scrap metal prices vary daily. But don’t despair! We can give you a narrow price range!

In general, you can estimate the price per pound for your metal based on its type and properties.

Type of metal

Which metal you bring in makes a big difference. Your local scrap yard will give you the highest prices for copper scrap. Aluminum, on the other hand, always sells at a lower price.

Copper: Up to $4.00 per pound. However, scrap pieces with lower copper content may only bring in 50 cents per pound.

Brass: About $3.50 per pound. Red brass often sells slightly higher than yellow brass.

Insulated wire: Prices vary between $1.50 and $4.00 per pound, though they may be lower or higher. It depends on the type of wire you have. For example, a No. 10 wire will sell at a higher price, while a No. 2 would sell at a lower price.

Aluminum: Both extruded and 60/61 aluminum will sell for slightly less than $1.00 per pound, often around 80 cents per pound.

Metal properties

Metals are either ferrous or non-ferrous. Non-ferrous metals sell much higher than ferrous metals. So, it’s best to know which kind you have before bringing it to a metal recycling yard.

But what is a ferrous or non-ferrous metal? In short, ferrous refers to whether the metal is magnetic.

Thankfully, you can quickly test to see if your metal is non-ferrous or ferrous. Take any magnet, even one off of your fridge, and put it on your scrap. If the magnet sticks, your metal is ferrous. If the magnet falls off, it’s non-ferrous.

Common non-ferrous metals include copper, brass, insulated wires, and aluminum. As you can see from the selling prices, these are definitely worth bringing in.

Ferrous metals include iron and steel. Unless you have a truckload, you probably won’t want to bother selling these.

In addition, not all scrap yards accept ferrous metal. Be sure to call ahead to find out their policies before bringing in your metal.

Where can I find copper to sell for scrap?

Copper is all around us! It is very popular because multiple industries use it. You’ll see it in the cooking, plumbing, and electrical industry, but it’s also gaining ground in the medical realm.

Common copper products include piping, plumbing fixtures or connectors, electrical wires, cookware, and, more recently, medical trays and tabletops.

A note on your pennies

A lot of people wonder whether they can melt and sell their pennies for copper scrap. Sorry, but you cannot. It’s illegal.

In fact, the government is so concerned about people melting copper pennies for scrap that you may not transport more than $5.00 in pennies between states!

Further, you’d have to get ahold of older pennies. Only pennies minted in 1982 or earlier contain 95% copper. After 1982, the government switched the penny recipe to 95% zinc.

Why are scrap copper prices 77008 so high?

Copper scrap is the cream of the crop because it is both highly desired and hard to find. But why do people want copper so badly? Because it works better than any other metal in many applications.

Electricians value copper because it is the safest, most efficient conductor available. In addition, it’s incredibly easy to install.

Medical teams use copper for its antibacterial properties. That’s right–copper prevents and kills microbes! With its natural ability to keep bacteria and germs at bay, medical teams can spend less time maintaining a sterile environment.

Chefs love that copper heats very quickly, lasts forever, and prevents bacterial growth. You may not know it, but non-copper cookware will start to grow bacteria as it ages. Copper pots and pans, on the other hand, will not.

Unfortunately, copper is hard to come by. Mines are closed, and few factories remain open. Because copper lasts an incredibly long time, people won’t need to recycle copper products for a long time.
